The Helmholtz Institute for Supercomputational Physics announces the 5th Summer School (2005) on Complex Networks In Brain Dynamics

The HELMHOLTZ INSTITUTE for SUPERCOMPUTATIONAL PHYSICS

announces the
5th Summer School (2005) on
COMPLEX NETWORKS IN BRAIN DYNAMICS
September 05 - September 30, 2005
University of Potsdam
Potsdam, Germany

Modelling complex networks is a very promising modern approach to obtain some understanding of the behaviour of the brain. However, the human brain is a highly complex system consisting of a hierarchy of networks of various kinds of neural oscillators. In the course of this summer school we will make extensive use of parallel programming and supercomputers for the simulation of network models of the brain in considerable detail, taking into account networks of networks with different topologies and different types of biologically realistic neural oscillators. We will study and analyse the emerging dynamical patterns with highly efficient nonlinear data analysis and visualisation techniques. The network models at different levels of abstraction will then be compared with each other in order to account for the description of macroscopic properties such as the generation of the EEG or event related brain potentials. The long-term objective is to relate the outcomes of the supercomputational network models with high-order cognitive processes such as word recognition or language processing in terms of coarse-grained symbolic dynamics.
