Services provided by CSE
E-Mail (FAQ)
We offer an alternative to the campus email. We have full control over the email server so we are a bit more flexible as to how our email is accessed and filtered. Many users of CSE email have noticed a significant drop in SPAM and viruses getting through to their inbox. Our email server can be accessed via webmail IMAPs and POP3s. If you have any questions about email please visit our FAQ on email or contact technical support.
If you need help configuring your email please see how to setup email.
Shell (FAQ)
We offer access to a Linux shell with every CSE account. You can use this account to read email (using pine or mutt), develop, test, and run custom code and just about anything else you can do at a Linux shell prompt. In the short term we will be moving shell services to a Xen virtual host so user will not affect other CSE services. Although we like to keep our services available as much as possible we also don't want a user to be able to bring down another CSE service because of a bug in some custom project. The default shell is bash but we also have tcsh and ksh amoung others available.
Kerberos-based Single Sign On
We are in the process of building a centralized authentication system. This will be based on Kerberos and potentially CAS. We aim to have all our services tied into a single authentication source making it easy to change passwords across services.
Subversion and trac
We have installed a Subversion server at CSE. Depending on the project, it is tied into either campus Kerberos or CSE authentication. If you need help with subversion please check out how to use subversion.
Xen Virtual Hosting
We are very excited about Xen at CSE. Many of our services run on Xen instances. If you have the need for a server please talk with us first. We might be able to do everything you'd like to do without buying new hardware. If you are interested in this service please contact technical support.
DNS
We currently run our own DNS services. We are open to being a secondary DNS for other departments or centers on campus. Contact technical support if you would like more information.
DHCP
Our DHCP services are the key to smooth operations at CSE. We use DHCP for most devices and if you are on our network you should be able to get an IP address automatically. We are in the process of changing our DHCP offerings and we cannot guarentee that you will get a publically routable IP address, and we may install a captive portal in the future.
Wireless
We offer open wireless services on the first and second floors of MSB. We also offer open wireless services on the fifth floor of Phys/Geo. You will get a Network Address Translated IP address that is not routable to the world. If you need a public IP address please contact technical support.
MySQL
We run numerous mysql servers in our network. Most of these servers are used for administrative purposes. If you have a need for a public MySQL server please let us know and we can set up an instance for you.
Software Mirror
We run a local mirror for various open source software. If you have something that you would like mirrored please contact technical support. Currently we offer a relatively fast Ubuntu mirror for the campus. The mirror is currently updated nightly.
